TUESDAY TRAVEL: EXCLUSIVE NECKER ISLAND

Among the British Virgin Islands lies Sir Richard Branson's very own private paradise - Necker Island. After buying the island to impress his wife-to-be, Branson transformed it into one of the world's most exclusive holiday destinations and a favourite among countless celebs.

When to Visit

Necker can be found amidst the British Virgin Islands so, like all Caribbean islands, it's pretty much a sun worshipper's dream all year round. Lowest temperatures tend not to fall past 28 degrees Celsius and during high season are usually around the mid thirties.

Accommodation

Although only 74 acres, Necker still caters for all with their various category rooms and suites.

The Great House

Necker Island's notorious Great House is perched on the highest point of the island, its huge wrap around balcony littered with hammocks and lounges allows guests to relax with unrivalled views of the Caribbean. The house operates an honesty bar where guests can help themselves to their tipple of choice or they may decide to sip champagne in the roof terrace's four person jacuzzi. It must be mentioned that the Great House is renown for its fantastic parties which guests are encouraged to enjoy - 'what happens on Necker stays on Necker!'

The Great House - Great Rooms

These standard category rooms can be found in the great house, all come with king size beds as standard, en suite bathrooms and their own balconies to lap up views of the ocean. The Great House and consequently the Great Rooms have a distinct Balinese style throughout, taking advantage of the gorgeous weather with their countless outdoor areas and balconies.

The Bunk Room

With a capacity of six children, the Bunk Room allows families to enjoy Necker together whilst giving mum and dad a bit of space. Kitted out with bunk beds, games consoles, toys and everything a child could dream of, they provide the perfect space for kids to wind down in the evening after an action packed day.

 The Master Suite

Spanning a staggering 1,500sqm, this suite is an experience in itself. As one would expect, the Master Suite comes with a king size bed and fully stocked kitchenette, our favourite feature however, would have to be the suite's infamous alfresco en suite bathroom, providing the ultimate relaxation as you admire the view whilst enjoying a deep soak.

Bali Houses

These private houses are (as the name suggests) also designed in an authentic Balinese style but are separate to the Great House. The ideal haven for honeymooners or couples in search of romance, Bali Houses also have en suites and fully stocked complimentary fridges.

What To Do

Dining

Part of Necker's beauty is in the fact that every holiday is tailor made and no feat is too great for its eager staff. Guests are encouraged to have new experiences, from a relaxed beach lunch on the island's Turtle Beach to romantic dinners on the Great House' roof terrace and of course we must mention its renown floating sushi bar in the beach pool.

Adventure

There are a host of activities to occupy guests whether on land or underwater. As a Caribbean island, Necker has some fantastic wildlife to admire, 'Island Walks' trail the three mile perimeter of the island allowing guests to appreciate its beauty. Two astro-turf floodlit tennis courts are available for those wanting to practice their backhand or have a training session with a tennis pro. Also, guests can partake in a variety of water sports from kite surfing to water-skiing, highly skilled instructors are always on hand ready to help.

How Much?

Virgin's flagship property, for the most part, is only available to rent as a whole with rates this year set at $65,000 per night, all inclusive, for up to 30 guests. However, 'celebration weeks' allow for individual renting, much like a mini (much more) exclusive holiday resort with guests looking at a cool $28,805 for an all inclusive seven night stay in a Great Room. All meals and drinks on Necker are part of the holiday package along with access to its endless list of facilities.
